Gardening With The Cake Mama
Come gardening with The Cake Mama! It's starting to feel a lot more like spring in Kelowna and that has me thinking about gardening! I can't describe the excitement I have when I start seeing garden centres fully stocked with seeds and flowers. There's almost a different scent in the air- do you know what I'm talking about? Maybe it's just fertilizer and grass but nevertheless I'm looking forward to getting my hands dirty again!
It's been nearly 2 years since we moved to Kelowna from our townhome in Langley. Our previous outdoor area was small so we were limited with our options. Gardening was basically not an option since we had a north facing backyard and that meant it was largely shady. Fast forward to our new home, we are situated on a 1/3 acre property and have LOTS of green space which means LOTS of gardening to do.
The weekend we moved into our home we had our family come up to help and in no time trees, hedges and invasive plants were torn out. Many a trips to the dump were made. Two years in we are still doing that sort of work! For a better representation of how nutty the landscaping was, you can watch it all in my highlight on Instagram!
Gardening Plans
This years projects consist of working on our veggie garden and more landscaping. I've already started on my seedlings and so far we have sprouts of cucumber, string beans, tomatoes, jalepeños and onions! We are also planting wild flowers to encourage more bees to visit our garden. Plants such as borage and nasturtiums will also be planted to keep pests away. (we hope!) Our raspberry bushes are starting to grow leaves and I have a little guy that is looking forward to our daily garden walks so we can pick them!
Landscaping Plans
As for landscaping, we are working on replacing the fencing on one side of our yard and lining the fence with cedars so we can mirror the other side of our yard and build a beautiful space with lots of privacy. We are also hoping to add another fruit tree to our garden- a dwarf nectarine tree!
We are very much looking forward to creating a lovely nature filled oasis in our home to enjoy over the warmer days ahead.Be sure to follow along on Instagram as we continue to document our journey there!
