5 Signs You Might Be in Perimenopause That Nobody Warned Me About

5 signs of perimenopause

Can we talk about how perimenopause somehow managed to be both the most talked-about topic on social media right now AND still completely blindside the majority of women who go through it? Because that's exactly what happened to me.

I've already shared my full perimenopause story here — the hot flashes, the HRT journey, all of it — but today I want to get into the signs that caught me completely off guard. The ones nobody put on a list for me. The ones I was either too confused to connect to hormones or too embarrassed to bring up.

If something feels off and you can't explain it, keep reading.

But first — a word about the perimenopause conversation online

Social media has done some genuinely good things for this conversation. I found so much information and community through it and I'm grateful for that. But I also want to be really honest with you: a lot of what's being sold to you out there right now — with a discount code, a wellness protocol, or a promise that this one supplement will fix everything — is not studied, not proven, and not personalized to your actual body.

I'm not going to tell you what to take or what to do, because I'm not a doctor and I don't know your situation. What I will tell you is this: find a qualified healthcare provider who takes you seriously, advocate for yourself at every appointment, and please don't let anyone convince you that an unproven supplement is somehow safer or more "natural" than a medication your actual doctor recommends. There is no one-size-fits-all answer here — and anyone online telling you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something.

Okay. Now let's get into it.

1. Feeling like a human furnace — hot flashes and night sweats

This one at least gets talked about, but nothing prepared me for what it actually felt like. Opening the car window in freezing temperatures because I felt like I was on fire. Waking up in a puddle of sweat. Feeling completely fine one moment and then suddenly and inexplicably overheated the next.

If you're experiencing this — especially combined with any of the other signs below — bring it up with your doctor. Don't wait it out the way I did. I suffered through this for far longer than I needed to.

2. Anxiety and depression that had no obvious reason

This is the one I wish someone had told me about explicitly and early. I'd be driving to pick up my son from school and find myself in tears for absolutely no reason. Daily anxiety that had no real trigger. A low mood that sat underneath everything like a grey cloud.

Because there was no obvious cause, it was easy to internalize — to wonder if something was just wrong with me. It wasn't. Estrogen plays a significant role in mood regulation and when it starts fluctuating, your mental health can take a real hit. If you're feeling unlike yourself emotionally and can't explain why, please bring it to your doctor.

3. Insomnia and the kind of exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix

Nights when I didn't sleep a wink. And then days where even when I did manage to sleep, I didn't feel rested. The combination of insomnia and relentless fatigue is one of the cruelest parts of this whole thing — because you need sleep to cope with everything else that's happening, and your body just won't cooperate.

This is real, it is documented, and it deserves to be taken seriously. If you're bringing it up with your doctor and being brushed off, find a provider who won't brush you off.

4. Your skin and your body's reactions completely changed

This is the one that genuinely surprised me most. Sensitivities to products I had been using for years without a single issue. A sudden reaction to topical anaesthesia that had never been a problem before. My skin becoming reactive and unpredictable seemingly overnight.

Fluctuating estrogen affects your skin's barrier, its hydration, and how your body responds to things it previously had no issue with. If your skin or your body's reactions have shifted dramatically and nothing else explains it — it might be your hormones. Document what you're noticing and bring the list to your doctor.

5. Hair loss, brain fog, and weight gain that exercise didn't fix

I lumped these together because for me they all showed up at the same time and painted this picture of a body that just wasn't responding the way it used to. I was exercising regularly, eating well, and my midsection was growing anyway. My hair was changing. And my brain felt like it was working through cotton some days.

None of these are vanity issues. They're real symptoms with real hormonal explanations. And they deserve real answers and support from a qualified professional.

The bottom line

I raw dogged perimenopause for way too long before getting answers. I don't want that for you.

Whatever you're experiencing, you deserve a healthcare provider who listens to you, validates you, and helps you figure out what's actually going on in your body. Whether that ends up being HRT, lifestyle changes, or something else entirely — that decision belongs to you and a qualified professional, not to whoever is currently trending on Instagram.

You are allowed to take medication if medication is what helps you. You are allowed to ask hard questions. You are allowed to leave a doctor who dismisses you and find one who doesn't. To find a qualified professional near you, check out menopause.org

And most importantly — you don't have to figure this out alone. The more we talk about this honestly, the less any of us have to suffer through it in silence. I'm rooting for you. 💕
